Hocus, Pocus, Clarinet Focus
The Saskatoon Concert Band invites audiences to an enchanting evening of music and imagination with Hocus Pocus, Clarinet Focus, a fall concert featuring guest soloist Gilles Turcotte, clarinet, on Saturday, November 1 at 7:30 p.m. at the Broadway Theatre.
With a program inspired by rhythm, folklore, and a touch of mystery, the concert showcases a captivating mix of works for winds. Highlights include Elizabeth Raum’s Dance Suite for Clarinet and Band, Marcel Saurer’s Klezmer Fantasy, and Randall D. Standridge’s The Witching Hour—a perfect nod to the season. The evening also features spirited favourites such as Shostakovich’s Folk Dances, Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre, and music from Danny Elfman’s Dick Tracy soundtrack.
Clarinetist Gilles Turcotte, a Saskatoon native, brings warmth, artistry, and virtuosity to the stage. A graduate of the University of Saskatchewan, Gilles has performed across Canada and Europe, appeared with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, and was nominated for a Western Canadian Music Award for his solo recording Demografx. Since retiring from a 21-year career with the Saskatchewan Health Authority, he has dedicated himself fully to performance and teaching, inspiring musicians of all ages.
