Saskatoon Community Bands present CHIAROSCRUO featuring the Wind Ensemble under the direction of Nick Fanner, and the Jazz Band under the direction of Doug Gilmour.
Chiaroscuro – A term borrowed from the world of art, literally means from “dark to light”. It is both a technique and a concept. It is a means of transitioning from shadows to light, or a means of creating contrasts. In a musical sense it can be the contrast of major to minor keys, the emotional contrast of louds and softs, or the change of tempo. The repertoire in this concert from both the performing ensembles will exemplify each of those techniques, providing for a truly exciting and energized listening experience. From the “dark” of The Lord of the Rings” to the uplifting almost angelic writing of Eric Whitacre’s “Lux Aurumque” the contrast of the dark & the light has never been more apparent.
Event Date: Wednesday, November 5, 2025 – 7:30pm
Location: Broadway Theatre, Saskatoon
Tickets: $15 all ages; available from the Broadway Box Office or members of the Wind Ensemble or the Jazz Band.

The Wedding Singer takes us back to a time when hair was big, greed was good, collars were up and a wedding singer might just be the coolest guy in the room. Based on the hit Adam Sandler movie, The Wedding Singer’s sparkling score does for the ‘80s what Hairspray did for the ‘60s. Just say yes to the most romantic musical in twenty years.
At its core, The Wedding Singer is about love, heartbreak, self-discovery, and the need to belong. These themes are as relevant now as they were then—maybe even more so. In a time when people are being told who they should be, how they should love, and what’s acceptable, The Wedding Singer reminds us of something vital: that love comes in many forms, that identity is personal, and that joy, connection, and authenticity are worth celebrating.

Open Mike Eagle found comedy in contemporary American horrors on albums like 2014’s Dark Comedy and catharsis in exposing his past on 2020’s Anime, Trauma, and Divorce. Now, the incisive, hilarious, and idiosyncratic purveyor of art rap praised by The New York Times, Pitchfork, and The New Yorker manipulates time like Dr. Strange on his new album, Component System with the Auto Reverse.

In the beginning, there was THUMP. Spontaneously combusting into creation at some point along the space-time-dance continuum, the musical group known as THUMPASAURUS has entertained, appetized, terrified and satisfied international audiences with their high production live shows, cinematic music videos, theatrical collaborations, late-night TV performances, and energy-packed albums, EPs, and singles ever since their big bang origin.
Jane Inc. is the solo moniker of Carlyn Bezic, forged after years spent building bona fides in the Toronto music scene with groups like U.S. Girls, Darlene Shrugg and dance-pop duo Ice Cream. Pitchfork called Number One, "dazzling... [Bezic] proves herself a musical Swiss Army knife, capable of anything and revelling in her multiplicity." Faster Than I Can Take was covered by SPIN, FADER, Pitchfork, Bandcamp Daily, and Stereogum, to name a few. In her live show, Bezic takes the conceptual edges of her work and pushes them with a physical abandon and “incredible presence, keeping the audience rapt even when she was justdancing hypnotically” (Brooklyn Vegan).

Maia Sinaiko and Susanna Thomson like to joke that they are delusional about Sour Widows, the Bay Area band they started seven years ago that is just now releasing its entrancing and powerful debut LP, ‘Revival of a Friend’. In those seven years, Sinaiko and Thomson each endured losses and hardships that at times required putting bigger plans on hold; looking back, they can only laugh at these hurdles and wonder if they should have taken them as signs—to stop, to start over, to succumb to the hardship.
PISS is a noisy, genre-bending 4-piece punk band from Vancouver B.C. The band combines music, poetry, sound collage, performance art, and various mediums of visual art to address complex themes that blur the line between personal and political.
Yarbo is an aggressive rock band from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. Bouncing between inspirations in ‘heavy music’ with an indifference towards classification, Yarbo’s music is consistently fast, catchy and punishing. Their debut album ‘Husband’ showcases this and it's pretty alright.

Annie-Claude Deschênes embraces multidisciplinarity in her quest to merge music and performance art, challenging stage conventions. A prominent figure in Montreal's independent music scene for over twenty years, she gained recognition as the frontwoman of the cult bands Duchess Says and PyPy. Annie's solo project marks a shift from aggression to dystopian disco vibes. Inspired by minimal pop and electronic pioneers, her debut album, LES MANIÈRES DE TABLE, is both danceable and disquieting, reexamining social codes of politeness
New York/Berlin based musician and multimedia artist JJ Weihl makes music under the moniker Discovery Zone. Growing up in Manhattan, JJ listened to a lot of 90s pop and oldies as a kid before discovering jazz and alternative rock as a teen. Spending most of her free time reading, writing stories and engaging with modern dance and theater — she started writing songs on the guitar in high school. Dance and choreography fueled her interest in music, leading her to touchstones like Art of Noise and Aphex Twin whose music often accompanied dance performances.
Mart Avi is known for making spiky and mysterious music for the feet and heart, for living and loving. He grew up in a pint-sized Estonian village named Vara ("Treasure" in English), toying around with rusty remnants from its industrious past that informed his aesthetics in creating another space, using topographies close at hand. Mapping uncharted territories between modern pop and timeless grandeur, Avi, as a sound master and singer-songwriter, is simultaneously suave and slippery. His shimmering melodies, crackling rhythms and off-kilter mindgames tend to seduce the unawares. A consummate performer, he presents a fascinating paradox of soulful tenderness pulsing beneath commanding arm thrusts and menacing high kicks.

With the western Canadian badlands as a backdrop, Direwind's chief inspiration lies in the past; The fundamental spark of being which connects historical humanity to all current lives, through the earth and sun and everything experienced in between.
Combining dissonant metal influence with stripped-down coldwave and industrial, all entwined with the tremulous voice of Saskatoon's own Taylor Jade, a deep well of influence produces music curious enough that it takes a moment to dissect just which comes from where. New Altrive Tales, the groups initial full-length, and its themes of consciousness, morality and antagonism, remain at home with aggressive tracks like bludgeoning opener "Auld"; but Direwind has no fear of ambience. The cold, elemental "Spire's Curse" closes the record with similar ease, reminding listeners not only of the past as a musical catalog of the 1980s, but the past as the lives of those who've come before and the spark that connects us all
Formed in 2013 and promptly getting to work on a split tape and two successive demos, Goathammer have been a study of staunch underground ethics from the very beginning. Theirs is a sound that's steeped in decades of arcane black/death wisdom, canvassing an array of eras and international flavors whilst being finessed into foul, filthy form by true fanatics. Their debut release for Hell’s Handbanger’s records, Ceremony of Morbid Destruction is the grand, garish culmination of Goathammer's noble work thus far. There’s a sulfurous aura and true dungeon-bound darkness that bespeak the ancient ways of the 1990s, but completely unselfconsciously so. Goathammer possess the unique elan to conjure a sensation that evokes both nostalgia and newness, and above all, put forth an identity that's theirs alone and offering boundless exploration of those depths for the future.

Bahay Kubo is more than just a drag collective, it’s a movement. We are rooted in Treaty Six territory, and we carry the name Bahay Kubo which translates to Nipa Hut - a symbol of Filipinx identity, resilience, and courage. Through performance, artistry, and unapologetic queerness, we weave a love letter to the Filipinx diaspora - to those, like us, who left the homeland in pursuit of a better future. We are brown and Asian joy incarnate, honouring culture and heritage, through the power of drag. Playwright, director and singer songwriter Sean Nicholas Savage has returned to a pop palette with his most brilliant batch of classic ballads to date. His new album, “The Knowing” is a pivot; at once more subversive and yet more fashionable than ever before.Savage engaged several collaborators on this record. Longtime accomplice Pascal Chenard recorded and produced the record with Savage in London, England, where Savage was born. The lead single, “Your Drug”, a reflective duet with Arbutus Records label mate Marci, both familiar and yet with an edgy bareness that allows it to recontextualize its nostalgic trope. Belgian singer songwriter David Numwami played guitar on the songs “Stranger Than Fiction” and “Wild Things” and artist JJ Weihl aka Discovery Zone co-wrote “Pink Bouquet”.

HYPOTHERMIA: An ASYLUM Winterruption spectacular
The Asylum: Gothic Industrial Gathering and The Broadway Theatre usher you back to the void at sub-zero, suspended in all of it’s phantasmagorical majesty on the Green Room Dancefloor! Disciplined ASYLUM wardens WIL MASCHINE and ZOO MUSIC GIRL will provide the requisite Goth, Industrial, and Darkwave sorcery that have been Asylum cornerstones since it’s inception, while Saskatoon miserabalist SKOT HAMILTON (KEN mode, Adolyne, etc) unveils his new solo entity, DEEP INFIRMARY.

DEEP INFIRMARY:
As a life-long devotee and architect of all things aurally caustic, it was only a matter of time before an experiment like DEEP INFIRMARY opened its glassy inhuman eyes, gained something approximating sentience and flung itself from the desk of stalwart noise-monger Skot Hamilton (KEN mode, Adolyne, et all...). A new solo undertaking intended to parade the industrial leanings that Hamilton has long alluded to on so many of his past efforts, this violently oscillating body of work evokes the vivid, whirring dystopias and charnel atmosphere of industrial's early phases and compels them to fresh animation. Fierce Tactility, thick grime and godless waves of manipulated racket collide with Hamilton's pre-existing notoriety for damaged, atonal noise-metal in a veritable vortex of ill tidings.

The Shivas have been called “the hardest working band in show business”. While that is impossible to measure, it’s also not far from the truth. Since their humble beginnings as high-school best friends almost two decades ago (the band formed in 2006), they have been grinding away tour after tour - visiting over 25 countries - and album after album - this is their 10th LP. Their sound has always evolved as they have grown, and worked with different labels and producers, but it has always stayed true to the psychedelic vision those kids had years ago at the very beginning.
WUT are three friends from Vancouver making jangly pop music with a punk rock heart. Being in love with craft and the handmade, they love to create- and have together released a cassette, a full length record, and 12 homemade music videos. Blue Fantasy began as a recording project (and an excuse to get together and hang out) for Saskatoon musicians Shelby Gaudet (the Radiation Flowers, Lucy’s Seduction) and Christopher Laramee (Runway, Wasted Cathedral) and Regina musician Christopher Sleightholm (Snake River). After recording on and off for a few years they completed their debut album in 2024, which is a homespun jangly garage folk kaleidoscope daydream. They added drummer Charles Lamire to play live, with the full lineup they can take the songs to new places. In 2025 they released a split LP with Chicago legends Plastic Crimewave Syndicate.

Playful as a puppy but smart as a whip, New Brunswick, Canada’s MOTHERHOOD has a knack for packing deeply conceptual art rock into a delightfully unpretentious package. Equal parts complex and unpredictable, the trio has assembled a bold body of work that blends the ferocity of punk, the finesse of surf, and the raw energy of garage into something riffy, rhythmic, and categorically ‘other’. Oft-described as “Evil Beach Boys”, Motherhood’s live show is as intense as it is endearing, with chemistry borne of a longstanding best-friends-first mentality. The Fredericton-via-Belleisle Bay trio oozes small-town charm, their rural roots showing in the hillbilly colloquialisms that have become their signature style.
French Class is an electronic synth pop project from Winnipeg. Megumi Kimata works in collaboration with Tiana Garcia on vocals, Gabriela Ocejo on guitar and vocals, Lindsay Woolgar on bass, Kevin Waters on drums and Nolan Gottfried on saxophone.

Even if more than 600 years separates the life of John-Sebastien Bach (1685 -1750) and Omar Khayyam (1048 -1131), these two genius were made to meet each other. Their visions of the world, as a perfect match of mathematics mastery and a super high level of spirituality, bring these two men in a delightful dialogue and traces a clear path to the sublime. In this program, Constantinople brings these two artists into a dialogue, where the sacred and spirituality transcend borders. For this new creation Constantinople proposes arrangements of some of the most beautiful spiritual songs and arias of JS Bach in dialogue with poems of Omar Khayyam sung in Persian and responding to Bach’s songs.

MRG Live Presents: Leith Ross – I Can See the Future Tour
ABOUT LEITH ROSS:
Hailing from a small town near Ottawa, Ontario, singer-songwriter Leith Ross (they / them) channels their honest and emotional storytelling through introspective lyrics and a blend of indie folk with alternative and rock sounds. In 2020, they first introduced their artistry and independently released their debut Motherwell EP. Recorded live, it received widespread praise from tastemakers and fans alike. They continued to evolve with their viral singles “I’d Have To Think About It” and “We’ll Never Have Sex,” while also maintaining their momentum with a rising social presence. Signing to Republic Records in 2022 lead to their long awaited debut album To Learn the following year. As with all of their music, the songs on To Learn are deeply personal and take them to vulnerable places, exploring themes like queerness, love, relationships, and mental health and rendered in folk-adjacent tones—sometimes with a pop beat or a rock riff, sometimes with just their voice and their guitar alone. Closing out 2023, they unveiled the deluxe version To Learn, More, including live versions of fan favorites “(You) On My Arm,” “Orlando,” and “To Learn.” Critical acclaim followed from the likes of NME, CLASH, Them., Ones To Watch, and The FADER, who hailed them as “your new obsession.” Beyond tours with Lord Huron, Bahamas, and Helena Deland, they sold out headline shows worldwide, performed at festivals across North America, and received the inaugural “John Prine Songwriter Fellowship” at 2022’s Newport Folk Festival and a nomination for “Alternative Album of the Year” at 2024’s Juno Awards. Now, with over 450 million streams across their catalogue to date, they return with the new emotionally charged single “Grieving,” heralding a highly anticipated new album helmed by hit producer Rostam [Vampire Weekend].
